Analyzing the effects of the green belt on urban development was performed by reviewing land-use pattern and population influenced by internal and external land-use trends. Raw data obtained from the Korea Ministry of Construction and Transportation and Ministry of Environment were employed for the analyses. Raw data include Landsat TM satellite imagery data of the green belt areas around 14 cities and the vicinities. Seasonal variation between the green belt of 1980's and 1990's were detected due to limited information available ; however the pattern of land cover could be classified into 5 classes. These includes agricultural area, water, built-up, forest and wetland. The green belt seems to contribute restriction of urban growth. However the leapfrogging development tendency in most part of green belt implies the lack of proper urban policy and planning. therefore, a policy consideration should be given to the control of the leapfrogging development in a comprehensive urban planning.
