Our concern is how to incorporate three concepts: welfare, Christian community and Christian Education. We attempt to find a crossing point of welfare and Christian Community. 'Koinonia' and 'diakonia' are gained as a similar nature of two concepts. Koinonia and diakonia were considered in the three dimensions of Christian Education.
First of all, koinonia and diakonia are expressions of Christian maturity in and out of Christian community. We need to consider these two Christian actions as the purpose of Christian education. Second, the principles of Christian educational activities should be realized to practice koinonia and diakonia. The learner may experience koinonia with God and Christians through Communion. This experience is not conceptual but concrete. A Christian educator helps his learner gain and practice the real view of Christian life. The compassion toward others is essential for koinonia and diakonia. This affective element of education seems to be often ignored in the intellectual trends of education. Today, self-realization is perceived as a virtue. However for koinonia and diakonia, we need a Christian curriculum that promotes and shows the importance of self-sacrifice. Last, an educational atmosphere should be formed within the Christian community. This will result in the hidden curriculum having a meaningful effect.
In conclusion, welfare is, currently, a practical issue in Christian education. It is, nevertheless, necessary to identify the 'Christian welfare' for a more developed discussion of this theme, because this trend of social welfare in Christian education seems to be far from the Christian mind of koinonia and diakonia. On the other side, we expect that the consideration of welfare will contribute to facilitate koinonia and diakonia in various Christian educational aspects.
