If historical consciousness in global age asks us to give up our own primal tie to a nation or a group and to become a world citizen, it’s not realistic. We are already subjugated to a special nation or a tradition with a strong emotional tie, thus discarding that tie is very difficult. But national consciousness and racial or sexual discrimination are learned through education and socialization, therefore we need to experience tolerance and enlightenment to exclude prejudice, to respect ‘others’, and to understand differences.
The crisis of identity caused by the challenge of globalization produced global nationalism. But the genuine meaning of studying national history is to view the mother country through its connection to world history. If teaching national history is only for fostering national identity and loyalty, there is little possibility for reflective questioning of nationalistic view. History education is not to promote loyalty to a nation or a state, but to improve self-critical understanding of national history.
Critiques on current world history writing is a way for critical history education. World history writing founded on European history is judged as a ‘myth’. New paradigm of world history means coexistence, co-respect, and acknowledging equality and differences of diverse human civilizations. Still exclusive possession of history and cultural dominance by the West is obvious. Therefore, critical mind for convergence of historical paradigm is needed with mind resources to resist cultural hegemony of western knowledge tradition.
