A great deal of data on the folk song of Cheju island including 〈Women Divers’ Rowing Song〉 has been collected and interpreted. Yet, much has been mistranslated or miswritten by collectors and commentators, among which rarely has been corrected. This paper is to take examples of mistranslation and errors in description of 〈Women Divers’ Rowing Song〉 recorded in the existing folk song data book, and correct them. Then, this can be served as an opportunity to think over interpretation on the data previously collected, and learn a precious lesson that accurate translation is essential when collecting and studying literature including this song of women divers, handed down by word of mouth.
The fundamental reasons for mistranslation and errors in description of the song are that collectors failed to listen to the recorded data correctly; was not familiar with the Cheju dialect; conducted an on-the-spot survey just for one time. In case there are unintelligible description or ambiguous words recorded in the first field work, the second and the third surveys should be followed to raise their value as data. In addition, words of description should be translated in accurate and cautious manner, based on the explanations of those who provide information. It has been confirmed that a collector’s arbitrary interpretation can fall into the error of mistranslation and explanation of description totally different from its original meaning when it is analyzed in literal terms.
Therefore, the data of 〈Women Divers’ Rowing Song〉 will have to be recorded based on the Notation of Cheju language prescribed by the Cheju Dialect Society in 1985, and added after being translated as standard Korean. Besides, detailed explanation will have to be added to the abstruse words. For all of these efforts make it easier for those who ate not familiar with the Cheju dialect to understand description of folk songs.
Moreover, experts who know the Cheiu dialect and customs well and particularly have a profound knowledge about words related to the sea and women drivers are needed to collect 〈Women Divers’ Rowing Song〉 handed down in Cheju island and the mainland.
