This study examined the emergence, spread, and education of Seowon, the leading educational institutes of Sajok, since the mid?Choson Dynasty. The following lists the outcomes of this study.
1) Seowon was established by the restoration movement of Sarim, the leading political power of the Choson Dynasty since the 16th century, to restore Yuhyangso and spread Hyangyak and to establish Confucian Yangchon. Sarim attempted to establish orders in Yangchon even before establishing Seowon, but failed because they were opposed by the Central Government. Seowon was a moderate measure that was adopted after several events of conflict between Sarim and the Central Government.
2) Considering the emergence of Seowon, early Seowon was generally influenced by Yi, Hwang's Theory of Seowon which greatly contributed to the spread of Seowon in the mid?16th century and promoted Localization of Yangchon. Political powers were consistently impacted the establishment and Saaek as Bugin, the leading political power under the reign of King Gwanghaegun, used Seowon to grow their powers. Such phenomenon spread with Seoin even after Injo Banjeong (the Restoration of King Injo).
3) Selection and admission of Wonsaeng to Seowon required a recommendation from an government?related personnel and a strict deliberation. As Seowon basically was open for Yangban class, it did not state any restriction of classes. However, Seowon started restricting certain classes as Jungseo class gained wealth and the Central Government started accepting illegitimate Yangban in the 18th century.
4) The educational goal of Seowon seems to be consistent until the mid?17th century. It generally programmed lectures, encouraged spontaneous researches of Yusaeng, and periodically had Ganghoe and Geojeop as well as Baegiljang of local government officers. Such educational performance, however, weakened after the late 17th century. This was not only influenced by the internal transformation of Seowon, but also by the weakening economic status of Seowon. In general, Seowon greatly contributed to local cultures as a leading educational institute of Yangchon and as the center of educational and general publications.
