The purpose of this study is to investigate the Sinhang Seawon(莘巷書院) in Cheongju(淸州) of the Joseon Dynasty focusing on the backgrounds of the establishment, process of management, and characteristics of the Confucian saints honored.
Sinhang Seowon, the first Seowon established in the Cheongju area during King Seonjo(宣祖)'s third year reign(l570), was a center of opinion among scholars around the Cheongju area till the establishment of Hwayang Seowon(華陽書院) during King Sukjong(肅宗). With enthronement of King Seonjo, the forces of Sarim(士林) started to strive for the reinstatement of the victims of the Kimyo(己卯) and the Eulsa(乙巳) Massacres of Scholars and Sinhang Seowon was established with this political situation.
Participated in the foundation of Sinhang Seowon were Hanyang Jo family(漢陽趙氏), Chogye Byeon family(草溪卞氏), Kyeongju Lee family(慶州李氏), Andong Kim family(安東金氏), etc., influential families around the Cheongju area that had settled due to the central political upheaval. Moving spirits among them were Jo Gang(趙綱) from Hanyang jo family, brother Byeon Gyeong Su(卞景壽) and Byeon Gyeong Bok(卞景福) from Chogye Byeon family and Lee Deuk Yun(李得胤) from Gyeongju Lee family.
The original name of Sinhang Seowon was Yujeong Seowon(有定書院), the name derived from the village name. It was renamed to Sinhang Seowon in 1660 as it gained the hanging board, which officially recognition from the dynasty, through the political power of Song Si Yeol(宋時烈) and Song Jun Gil(宋浚吉).
In terms of its leadership and management, the history of Sinhang Seowon were divided into two periods. The first period was when the sajok(士族) of Cheongju area, directly participating in the establishment of Sinhang Seowon, played the leading role in running the system The second period was when Song Si Yeol and his disciples actively took responsibility for its operation, Honoring Lee Yi(李珥) the most among nine Confucian saints, Song Si Yeol faction emphasized the hierarchic order of worship of saints and tried to adjust the traditional worship order according to their own will. However the harmonious agreements over the problem of worship order were virtually impossible because of the internal disputes among themselves. The dispute was initially originated from the controversies among Noron(老論, Old Doctrines), a political faction which attached too much importance to the process and method of worship. These problems were ordeals for recognition of Confucian ideals. As a result Seowon lost its functions, finally disappeared in 1871. Another reason for the collapse of Seowon was to be used the place avoiding the duty of people for nation.
Sinhang Seowon set up mortuary tablets of nine honorable saints(九賢) and performed sacrificial rites at five different times. The standard of the worship order were depended upon the evaluations of the Confucian saints in terms of patriotism, filial piety, academic achievements, and local bandage. The major motivation for this custom existed in the establishment of Confucian orthodox of Song Si Yeol's clique and in the maintenance of family power-base generation after generation through the ancestor worship.
