Bakun-dong(白雲洞) seowon is located at sunheung village in youngju city. It is the first seowon in korea founded by Chu, Se-bung in 1543.
The purpose he found this seowon was formulating the new educational climate. Confucian scholars tended to focus on the classical examination system for the government service in old-time Korea instead of cultivating their mind. For redressing this, he established private local schools. He made confucian scholars get their mind off having an eye on succeeding in life and buckle down to their work, confucian philosophy(道學) based on loyalty and filial piety. For this, he provided them with scholarship system and dormitory almost perfectly.
He made them sing a song, Dodongok(道東曲), one of kyoungkicheka(景幾體歌), especially during a religious rite time in Sosuseowon. This was because he wanted to make a discussion on theoretical tradition sure and foster the climate of Flourishing studying. He also tried to civilize uneducated people by writing sijo(時調) Oryunka(五倫歌), one of korean traditional verses, while he was working a provincial governor in Hwanghae province.
All of these, using korean songs at a religious rite and making the most of them in civilizing people, were results on recognizing the utility of korean songs throughly. It finally contributed to diffusion of korean songs vastly.
Nowadays, we need to be out of 'Education for the sake of Examination' and take the education program focused on the education of human nature and its values following a pattern of seowon education.
