This research is focused on the folk culture of Korea's southwestern area to give a better understanding of the area in connection with the recent trend to emphasize the use of cultural resources.
One of the most significant natural features of the southwestern area is that it consists of numerous islands. Fishing has always been a major industry in the region and acts as a focal point of communal and religious life. Many villagers here worship the god of "dragon king" as the guardian of their safety and prosperity as well as the keeper of order and their identity. For the fishing people of the region, the sea is not an object to challenge or quest but a resource for living and a space with rich cultural meaning.
Some tend to mention isolation or the residue of archetypes as a main feature of island culture, but considering the folk traditions and culture in the region other interpretations are possible. In this study, I use comparative autonomy to describe the main feature of the folk culture and traditions in the region which have undergone a numerous changes via exchanges with the outside world. In fact, one characteristic of the folk culture in the region is that it has continued to change as it is handed down to later generations, particularly by increased the productivity in fishing and the strengthened sense of community during the later Joseon era.
The folk traditions such as funerals and Namsadang folk entertainment dearly show that the region has actively responded to outside cultures, recreating them as their own. As for Namsadang folk entertainment, for example, the local people of the region created "Namdo Japga" (Miscellaneous Songs of the South) and other elements are kept for funeral rituals while in other regions it remains a "professional" event. I believe that the process of recreating folk culture in the region deserves further study.
The folk culture of the southwestern coastal region continues to be handed down to later generations without losing the characteristics of the insular culture rooted in the life and history of the local people. What is notable here is that characteristics are embodied in both a historical context and actual folk life, meaning the preservation of the unique folk culture should be carried out by considering its social context and traditions. That is why the current movement of developing it as a "tourist product" without considering actual folk life can result in damaging the influence and cultural significance surrounding the original art form based on people's life. New interpretations or re-creations are unavoidable, but should be carried out within the historical, social and culture context.
