Hwang Sa-yeong wrote the original Baekseo out of grief for the harsh reality imposed on Korean Catholics by the Sinyu Persecution and his dedication toward the Catholic Church. In his Baekseo, Hwang recorded the executions of innocent Catholics and the Reverend Ju Mun-mo, and expressed strong desire for the end of persecution toward Catholics. In addition, wishing not to make the deaths of his fellow Catholics in vain, he presented ways on how to reconstruct the Church and achieve freedom of religion.
A variety of alternative versions emerged after the original Baekseo was first copied by the Uigeumbu, the judicial authority of Chos?n, Versions produced by the Narnin, or Southern Faction, are hand-copied versions of the original Baekseo. The identities of the producers are not known to this day. The versions include the Sayeong Baekseo Ⅰ and Ⅱ preserved at the Jeoldusan Martyrs Museum, and the "Sayeong Baekseo" inserted in Lee Man-chae's Byeokwipyeon. Versions by the Noron(Old Learning) Faction include the "Sajeok Sayeong Baekseo" inserted in Dongrinrok.
The Sayeong Baekseo Ⅱ and the version included in the Byeokwipyeon omit praises toward fellow Catholics and politically sensitive remarks by Hwang. Meanwhile, probably to maintain faithfulness to the original, the Sayeong Baekseo Ⅰ contains less personal opinion of the producers than other versions by the Namin. The Sayeong Baekseo Ⅱ is regarded to have been produced by a government official belonging to the Byeokpa sub faction, considering the detailed description on Hwang Sa-yeong's ancestors and Chinese officials. The Byeokwipyeon Baekseo does not include any reference to Euneon-gun, or Prince Euneon, and his family(his wife and daughter-in-law). Alternative versions of the Baekseo produced by the Namin also use diplomatic and honorific expressions when referring to China Meanwhile, the version of the Baekseo in the Dongrinrok refers to Hwang Sa-yeong as a sajeok, or a malicious enemy, and includes references of Euneon-gun, just as with the Sayeong Baekseo Ⅰ and Ⅱ. This was probably because from the Noron point of view, the fact that Euneon-gun and his family members were executed for converting to Catholicism was useful in emphasizing that they were the descendants of Sado-Seja, or Crown Prince Sado. In addition, the producer omitted any remarks by Hwang considered to be intolerable threats against the state and tried to hide the fact that Gangwha Island had been invaded.
This study revealed that alternative versions, and not the original, have become the main criteria in understanding Hwang Sa-yeong's Baekseo, while the views of the producers of the alternative versions have been wrongly accepted as the views of Hwang Sa-yeong himself. Such a comparative study on the alternative versions will contribute to future in-depth studies and reviews of the original Baekseo text.
