This article examines the issue of social adjustments of North Korean migrants in South Korea from the perspectives of minority studies. To further explore multiple aspects of social adjustments, adjustment is divided into political ideological, economical, cultural, social relational, psychological, and health aspects to assess the migrants’ adjustment status. The primary source of data for this study comes from a comprehensive survey on the settlement of North Korean migrants conducted by the Information Center for North Korean Human Rights with 1,366 North Korean migrants in South Korea in 2005.
Study results revealed that most North Korean migrants are having difficulties with economic adjustments, which is a fundamental social adjustment. 30~40% of the economically active population are unemployed, and those who are employed are involved in part-time employments, physical labors or service type employments. The migrants are having difficulties culturally adjusting because of differences in language, values, and ideologies when developing personal relationships with South Korean residents, and of difference in social structures and social cultural differences. In cultural activity aspects, the migrants’ main leisure activities include utilizing the mass media by watching televisions and videos, or listening to the radio, and they were not as involved in active leisure activities that promote self improvements such as sports or other leisure activities outside their homes, or academic activities. In social relational aspects, North Korean migrants who have no relations in South Korea face problems of absent social networks that provide opportunities and information. In psychological adjustment aspects, the migrants are having difficulties psychologically adjusting due to cultural and ideological differences between South and North Korea and prejudice and unfair treatments from South Korean residents. In health aspects, many North Korean migrants have poor health status and the rate of the migrants’ diseases and ailments are much higher than that of South Korean residents. Such poor health status makes it difficult for the migrants to acquire employments and lead a normal social economic life.
