Single node cuttings with a five-leaflet leaf of potted miniature roses were excised from 6- to 8-weekold stock plant stem and were cultured in vitro after removing the leaf and petiole. Axillary bud position affected shoot growth in vitro. The shoot fresh weights of ‘Baby Meillandina’ and ‘Yellow Meillandina’ increased basipetally, while those of ‘Indian Meillandina’ and ‘Silk Red’ were the greatest in the middle section and decreased or constantly maintained in the bottom section. Generally all cultivars showed the lowest shoot fresh weight in the top closest to the shoot apex. Three shoot types, single shoot, elongated single shoot, and multiple shoots, were produced in the potted miniature rose ‘Silk Red’ during 24 days of culture on MS basal medium without any supplemental plant growth regulators (PGRs). Shoot length and length of the longest leaf were significantly affected by bud position, shoot growth type and PGRs when the explant was transferred to MS basal medium (MS salts, B5 vitamins, 30 gㆍL?¹ sucrose, and 0.8 gㆍL?¹ agar) with various combinations of 6-benzylaminopurine and naphthaleneacetic acid.
