The problems in applying Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, as epitomized in his Distinction, to contemporary Korean context are addressed. More specifically, we examine how its theoretical implications are borne out empirically in Korean society by analyzing a recent data ― The Survey of Women’s Cultural Consumption (2005). The analysis proceeds in two stages. First, to identify the structure of cultural consumption, we generate a map, in which a set of 30 leisure activities are arrayed according to the choices made by the respondents. Contrary to the prior research, no clear pattern of stratified differentiation was found. The finding, instead, shows a pattern influenced by multiple factors. In the second stage, we conduct multivariate analyses to ascertain the factors that affect these choices. We find that the factors considered previously ― such as class, economic and cultural capital ― lose much of their explanatory power once the other dimensions of social differentiation ― such as gender, generation, and area of residence ― are taken into account. On the whole, the discrepancy between the results we report here and those of prior research suggests a need to reconsider the existing analytical framework.
