This paper deals with residing space from the standpoint of comparative folkloristics. Three main aspects of this subject will be discussed, such as cosmology and environmental ideas, social status as well as gender divisions and folk beliefs. The domestic space, in Korea as well as in Mongolia, is a sharing place for individuals, families and kin members. Thus, it is one of the most important component elements in daily life.
The first aspect of the analysis of residing space is cosmology and environmentalism. Cosmology is a most distinctive feature of both Korean and Mongolian culture. Namely, the residing space in Korea and Mongolia is harmonizing with the neighbouring environment. Also the residing space in both countries is not only the place for alive members but also a small cosmos for dead ancestors as well as deities in the house and Buddhist gods.
The second aspect is status and social position inside the residing space in both countries. In a traditional Korean house, the space for men is located in the south and east whereas the space for women is placed in the north and west. While, in comparison, in a Mongolian traditional tent(ger), the space for men is situated in the west and the space for women is in the east. The northern part of a Mongolian tent(ger) is called hoimor and means the "upper place". Also the hoimor is the place where men and women are being divided.
The third aspect is folk belief concerning residing space in both Korea and Mongolia. These folk beliefs are closely linked to main gates, the threshold, the ceiling, the kitchen, the fire place, etc. Hence, through folk beliefs we get very concrete and vivid explanations of the importance of residing space, cosmology and environmental issues, directions, gender and social status. This comparative folkloristic study shows what is common and how residing space is used in Korea and Mongolia.
