This study is intended to analyze ethnographic films made by German folklorists, especially films made by the Institute of European Ethnology established at University of Gottingen in Germany. For this purpose, this study, first of all, recites the debates on the definition of ethnographic films, and outlines its basic objectives based on them. This is followed by an explanation of the quantitative and qualitative analysis methods needed for analyzing ethnographic films. Finally, there comes a discussion on the notion of reality necessary for the analysis of films.
Based on the explanation above, this study has critically analyzes German ethnographic films of the Nazi period. Also, the study focuses on IWF which primarily promoted ethnographic films from the postwar to the 1970’s. Thereafter, this study analyzes Luisenhall by Ballhaus. He works for the Institute of European Ethnology established at University of Gottingen. In postwar German, the University promoted the making of ethnographic movies in earnest.
Getting out of the German tradition of ethnographic films, Edmund Ballhaus didn’t confine the film contents to the salt making process, but showed salt-making worker’s everyday lives and their work schedules which they felt intense. He also used interviews, comments and various photographic techniques for his movies. By these methods, Ballhaus not only made folklore materials movies, but also considered the possibility of these movies being durably used for folklore studies. It is estimated that he accepted the American and French methods of making ethnographic films in accordance with the new research trend of German folklore.
