Three distinguishing characteristics are found in case rain making rites are compared between two adjacent regions: Yecheon(醴泉) and Mungyeong(聞慶). Firstly, in terms of patterns, Yecheon features and transmits Sasi(徙市, moving markets to places close to a river) rain making rites which are centered around the rivers, whereas Mungyeong does Yongchu(龍湫, spot whose depth is especially deep in valley streams) rain making rites which are centered around the mountains.
Secondly, in terms of the size of regions in which rain making rites are performed, the unit ranges from village to myeon(面) and gun(郡) in Yecheon, whereas the unit bigger than village (in which rain making rites are performed) is rarely found in Mungyeong.
Thirdly, in terms of magic principles, the method of rain making rites in Yechoen is obedient, whereas that in Mungyeong is defiant. More than 40% of rain making rites in Mungyeong are defiant, which are performed through spraying blood to tarnish sanctity, whereas the same kind of rain making rites are not found in Yecheon.
The cultural differences in rain making rites are significant though Yecheon and Mungyeong are geographically adjacent regions, the reasons of which may be explained as follows: the differences in geographical and sociocultural environment. Mungyeong is widely distributed with steep mountainous area, whereas the mountains in Yecheon are not so steep. Thus Mungyeong has developed a culture based in mountains, whereas Yecheon has developed a culture centered around the rivers. The differences found in Mungyeong and Yecheon in terms of patterns, magic principles, and the method of rain making rites are originated from the differences of geographical environment and the way their people made their living.
In addition, sociocultural differences have generated the regional differences in rain making rites. In case of Mungyeong, the rain making rites were performed by the central government because Juheul Mountain was designated as Sosa(小祀, natural items which were worshiped by government) in early Chosun Dynasty, which caused the declination of rain making rites performed by regional government in this region. That can be interpreted as a cultural phenomenon that more powerful cultural element intakes the other weaker ones. Thus Mungyeong has developed and transmitted regional rain making rites performed in the unit of village, whereas the unit in which rain making rites are performed variously range from village to myeon and gun in Yecheon.
