This study examined the former names of the River Geumgang(錦江) from the ancient times to the Joseon era, and explored rites performed by the government for the river. In ancient times, instead of the Geumgang(gang meaning 'river'), Ungjin(jin meaning 'ferry'), Ungcheon(cheon meaning 'river'), Ungcheonha(ha meaning 'river'), Ungjingang, Sabiha, Baekgang and Gibeolpo(po meaning 'shore') were used to refer the river. In the Goryeo period, the names Gongjugang and Gongjuha were used, and by the end of the Goryeo period the name Geumgang first appeared and began to be used. However, until the early Joseon period, the representative name of what is now the Geum River was Ungjin, and it was not until the late Joseon period that the entire river was called the Geumgang.
After Silla's unification of Three Kingdoms, the River Geumgang was classified into Seodok meaning western channel among Fourchannels for which medium rites were performed. In the early Joseon period, the River Geumgang was classified into Namdok meaning southern channel, and the rite for Namdok was administered at Ungjinyeonso located in the middle region of the river. In addition to Ungjinyeonso, Ungjinbunso in the upper region and Ungjinmyeongso in the lower region were venues for the national rites in the early Joseon period. The three venues, in which national rites were performed in the early Joseon period, all had names including the word "Ungjin," and the rites administered there followed the Confucian way. However, as time passed, all the rites except for Ungjinyeonso in the middle region were changed into the rite praying for rain or dragon-related rite, and the word Ungjin disappeared from the names of the rites. Moreover, Ungjinyeonso was excluded from four channels for which medium rites were performed, ending up being a venue where small rites were administered.
