In this essay, by reading Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker, I define and discuss the problematics and positive possibilities of (re)translating ethnic cultures in the dominant American culture. Translation has traditionally been considered as one of the principle means by which ideas are transmitted across cultures. But history has shown that translation can be used as a weapon to reform a culture or certain aspects of it. This is particularly true in the case of translating from a strong culture to a weak culture. But acceptability-oriented strategies of translation may not be always equated with ethnocentrism and assimilation. The same type of strategies can be informed by different ideologies in different situations.
Henry Park, the protagonist of the novel considers Kwang, the politician only as one of the most successfully assimilated Asians in the beginning of the novel. But getting more deeply into Kwang's life, he recognizes that one cannot change the reality by “calling on a bright memory of a time that has gone,” and finds a possibility in Kwang's radical retranslation of Korean culture (“family,”“ggeh,” “silence”). I think the fall of John Kwang suggests not that cultural translation is impossible, but that moment is not yet ripe. Through Kwang's radical rewriting of Korean culture, I demonstrate why real translation is transparent, how it allows the pure language, and how it can be involved in the re-figuration of the boundaries of culture, following Walter Benjamin's concept of translation in “The Task of the Translator.”
