Culture offers guides to communication or action and enables communication between society members. People in the same cultural area know how toact in specific situations. Action is a very important cultural expression, because it informs how to analyze the motion of body to us. Actions of animation characters improve the accuracy of dialogue transmission and embodythe emotions of the character. They are extremely important elements of nonverbal communication, which can help audience members empathize with a character.
In this study, we compare the forms of nonverbal communication found in animation produced in Korea, Japan, and America, according to Hofsteder's cultural index, and determine how they represent each nation's cultural characteristics. The result of this study shows the importance of nonverbal communication in animation, and elements should be considered for animations that have Korean culture value or animations produced for other culture area.
