This paper attempts to show that there are considerable similarities in the conceptual systems of IN/OUT between English and Korean and these conceptual similarities can have a positive effect on teaching English IN/OUT phrasal verbs to Korean students. As a preliminary study for the purpose, this paper sorts out English OUT/IN phrasal verbs from high school English text books, and classified them into several groups on the basis of the criteria of image schemas and conceptual metaphors from the cognitive semantic framework. Then they are compared with the Korean conceptual system of IN/OUT orientation. The result shows that more than 80% of the phrasal verbs from English text books belongs to the same image schema(e.g., container schema) and most phrasal verbs in the basic schema have the similar conceptual system to that of Korean. Even in the case where opposite conceptual systems are found, it is still possible to give motivated explanation to the both conceptual systems. From this result, it is expected that students can learn English phrasal verbs more easily with cognitive semantics￢motivated explanations and through activating language transfer (Korea National University of Education).
