The purpose of this study was to develope the sociocultural model that explains the effect of Korean junior and senior high school students' sociocultural factors influencing EFL(English as a foreign language) learning on cross-cultural communicative competence.
The basic framework consists of 9 constructs. Independent variables included in the model are individual factors such as 'learning motivation', 'learning attitude', 'learning strategies' and 'perception of the necessity of culture education', all of which are related to sociocultural context, and social factors such as 'perception of parents' involvement', 'teacher's attitude and teaching-learning strategies in the classroom', and 'sociocultural policy'. Dependent variables are 'target culture understanding' and 'cross-cultural communicative competence'.
The results of this study were that the overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was good in that regression analysis indicated an adequate direct effect: R2s of all the independent variables on the two dependent variables are from .189 to .257.
In conclusion, it can be suggested that teachers and researchers should investigate the ways to decrease perceived negative factors influencing students' target culture understanding by reducing negative learner attitude and emotional responses. And it is also recommended that teachers should have students recognize the importance of target culture understanding to improve cross-cultural communicative competence and that they should develope and offer learning materials and teaching methodologies in order to enhance students' target culture understanding.
