What Virginia Woolf pursues in To the Lighthouse is the androgynous vision. In A Room of One's Own, she criticized patriarchy and advanced the androgynous mind. Her idea about the relation of man and woman in the book is embodied in To the Lighthouse. In part I of the novel, the traditional relation of husband and wife is presented in Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay's married life; in part II, an annulment of such a male and female relation is implied in a series of tragic accidents and terrible natural phenomena which lead to nothingness; finally, in part III, we recognize the dual aspects of the lighthouse and they uphold Lily's androgynous vision at the end of the novel. Woolf leaves the novel open with Lily's personal vision, so that the reader wonders what kind of relation she will have with men with her androgynous mind.
Lily's androgynous vision opens the way to her dialogic relation with men. Because androgynous mind is limited to a person's way of thinking and dialogic feminism is based on the relation between man and woman, they look dissimilar. However, in that they accept both male and female without discrimination and are based on harmonious relation of both sexes, they have something in common. A person of androgynous mind leads to have the Bakhtinian both/and relation with other sex. Thus, Lily who attains to an androgynous vision at the end of The Lighthouse is expected to have dialogic relation with men. It is surprising that Woolf presented the androgynous mind in the novel, which is the precondition of the Bakhtinian male and female relation, more than sixty years before the advent of dialogic feminism.
