The purpose of this study is to survey the English language level of Korean secretaries to foreign supervisors. The need for active research in this area is important as we are now living in the era of globalization where the international exchange and trade in business is clearly expected to increase enormously in the future. Personal in-depth interviews with 20 secretaries, who are currently working with foreign supervisors were conducted for this study to get more specified view on the language ability for secretaries working with foreign supervisors.
The result of the interviews showed that the interviewees generally showed a certain degree of confidence in their linguistic ability to communicate with their supervisors. The result of the TOEIC and TOEFL score survey strongly revealed that all of them marked high scores in general, which reveal their official high English language proficiency.
Interviewees also responded that they want to improve their proficiency in certain linguistic areas. The response can be divided into two groups according to the years of working experience. The respondents who has less than 5 years of working experience indicated that the language skills of speaking and listening are the weakest areas and senior secretaries with more than 5 years of working experience responded that they need to improve their ability to translate from English into Korean.
In general, all the interviewees felt some kind of cultural differences in their working environment, however, all of the accepted their situation as an opportunity to learn and understand the other cultures and languages.
In conclusion, the secretaries working with foreign supervisors are successfully adapting themselves into the internationalized office environment and properly equipped with the relevant office skills, knowledge and language ability that are the essential elements for the office professionals.
