Writing plays an important role in English teaching and learning as it is more directly connected to internalized thought. Writing is also multisensory, thereby encourages learning. Since writing induces communicative ability, it is advised that writing be included as a required part of the English course if not a part of English curriculum. The present study examines college students’ writing with specifically given task of formal and informal letter writing to learn the types of the verbs used in their writing. The analysis was done on the data of 43 first-year college students. The results showed that these students used the average of 182 words in 16 sentences for formal letters and 177 words in 17 sentences for informal letters. The total number of 186 different verbs were used for formal letters, and 197 diverse verbs for informal letters. As the results revealed that a wide range of verbs were actually used in over-ten-word sentences producing complacent outcome for both reader (teacher) and writer (student), letter writing can be a helpful exercise in English course to enhance students’ communicative skills of English. A guideline can be provided for researchers and textbook writers to include a variety of verbs in the vocabulary so that the learners of English be exposed to practice in sentence production with numerous examples.
