I tried to compare two poems written by Jeong Ji-young; “Hyang-soo” and “Go-hyang” in this paper. The poet idealized his native land and rural life as a special place to cure the wound to be forced by colonialization in “Hyang-soo”. This poem creates ‘hybrid’ space which is deprived from the mixture of his remembrance and modern experience. Nevertheless many readers accepted the scenery which is depicted in this poem as his native land, irrelevant to his real experiences . As it were, it evokes to reader an special imagination of such a group which shares same remembrances with him and a community to which he belongs. Such reading is a product of atmosphere of Korean society which asks an imagination of nation through the mass consumption of nostalgia.
In contrast, the landscape of native land is not depicted immediately in “Go-hyang”. This poem shows the irony that the poet cannot accept his native land as native land. It was common fate of the intelligence of colony who exists between modern and pre-modern. This poem clearly shows that native land which guaranteed to the poet (who experienced the modern life) happiness and peace does not exist any more. As a result, this poem shows the self-realization of poet who is forced to face to estrange and hostile world(modern world) after leaving native land. The image of ‘cloud’ shows the fate of modern individual who has not solid identity and has to wander to find his identity in the unceasing changes and flux.
This differences relate to the inner life of intelligence of colony who cannot overcome the contradiction between modern and pre-modern. The idealized native land in “Hyang-soo” is the expression of unconsciousness of the intelligence to escape the fear and angst to be forced by colony system. And “Go-hyang” shows that he cannot escape from modernization in spite of the fear and angst to it. So understanding of “Go-hyang” is essential to the critical reading of “Hyang-soo” which may be used to evoke the ‘imagination of nation’. Because “Go-hyang” shows us the fate of modern individual who cannot but face to estrange and hostile world by himself.
