The term ‘Yubeol/儒罰 punishments’ refers to the punishments that were exacted in a self-regulatory fashion by the Confucian students, and also exacted upon themselves. There are plenty of such punishment examples that were exacted, not only upon the students who were studying at the Seonggyun-gwan, but also upon the students who were residing in local regions.
What should be noted primarily in reference to the Yubeol punishments, is the fact that such punishments became a general practice during the latter half of the 16th century and then continued to expand throughout the country. And the fact that the government also recognized the efficiency of such practices should be duly noticed as well.
In this article, the surfacing and the popularity of the Yubeol punishment practices are both considered as the periodic characteristics of the 16th and 17th centuries, and the phenomenon itself is examined through examples related to the Seonggyun-gwan.
The biggest characteristic of the Yubeol punishments is the self-regulatory nature of the practice itself that was generated among Confucian students themselves. External intervention was not permitted. Especially, in the case of Seonggyun-gwan’s Yubeol punishments, the punishment practice was considered as a highly independent issue, and even the king or the government could not intervene in the decision-making process regarding those punishments. So, in this research, the issue of independence related to the punishment practice is also examined, alongside the practice itself.
