The goal of this paper is to classify the music recorded on phonograph records that were sold during the first half of the 20th century and examine the characteristics of this music according to genre. Specifically, this paper classified into genres the phonograph records sold in Korea from 1907, when the first commercial record was sold, to independence from Japanese rule in 1945, then examined the characteristics and meaning of these genres.
Although it is true that genre and song type names were confused and misused during the first half of the 20th century, it is important to classify this music in order to gain a systematic understanding of the music recorded on phonograph records during the Japanese colonial period. Thus this paper divided the musical styles of phonograph records of the time into traditional music, popular music, and Western music. Next, the genre and song type names that were encompassed by these musical styles were examined, and the results are as follows.
In the case of traditional music, it was seen that folk music was more prevalent then court music, just as had been the case during the previous era. Also, the types of songs showed a variety of attempts at combining traditional music and Western music in order to adjust to the new musical culture. Popular music saw the formation of a variety of genres, such as popular songs (yuhaengga)-which included trot-new folk songs, comic songs, and jazz songs, and these genres existed alongside each other and in competition with each other. There were also theme songs and light music, making early Korean popular music that much richer. Finally, Western music included a wide variety of vocal and instrumental music, including hymns and school songs. Records of children’s songs also occupied a significant portion of the market.
Judging by the genres and types of songs found on phonograph records, the music culture of the Japanese period was characterized by the existence of Western music, traditional music, and Japanese music, and by the interaction, mutual influence and intermingling of these musical styles. In particular, vocal music was more prevalent than instrumental music, and genres such as miscellaneous songs (japga) and trot, which were characterized by excessive expression of emotion and feelings of grief, were predominant.
