We compared the functional analysis of several agricultural products cultivated in conventional and pesticide-free condition in high glucose-induced activation of mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) in primary cultured rat mesangial cells. Extracts of tomato, apple and Hallabong cultivated in conventional and pesticide-free (chitin degrading microbes mixture of Bacillus cereus, Serratia marcescens, Paenibacillus illinoisensis and Bacillus subtilis extracted from soil) condition were treated to the mesangial cells in high glucose condition (25mM glucose). In the present study, high glucose increased phosphorylation of pERK, pJNK, and p38 MAPK in mesangial cells. Among treated agricultural products, only the extracts of Hallabong cultivated in pesticide-free condition protected high glucose-induced activation of pERK, pJNK, and p38 MAPK. In addition, the extracts of Hallabong cultivated in pesticide-free condition protected high glucose-induced increase of [³H]-arachidonic acid (AA) release and exhibited more antioxidant effect compared to Hallabong cultivated in conventional condition. In conclusion, extracts of Hallabong cultivated in pesticide-free condition exhibited anti-diabetic effect in mesangial cells, compared to those of Hallabong cultivated in conventional condition.
