Lee Saek (1328~1396) was a most celebrated scholar and a politician who was against the founding of Chosun dynasty. Until now many researchers on him have been carried out, but they still have contents to be examined on his status in the late Koryo's political condition. Currently the political history of late Koryo is explicated by the confliction between Sejok(世族) and Sadaebu(士大夫). According to this, it can be understood that the founding of Chosun dynasty by Sadaebu was not a mere power shift but a big change of the ruling class. If so, did Lee Saek belong to Sejok or Sadaebu? This article is to answer this question through analyzing his political activities during the reign of King Wu.
Reading Mogeun-sigo(牧陰詩藁), poetry of Lee Saek carefully, you will see that he was rarely occupied in the government post during the reign of King Wu. Also under the circumstances of constant accusations of high treason, he neither got involved nor participated in those. It means that he didn't concern himself in politic throughout reign of King Wu. However, Lee Saek did a leading role in the process of enthroning King Chang, and reforming the land system after the march back from Yalu(威化島回軍) in 1388. It could bepossible because he was the central figure of newly emerged neo-confucians(新興儒臣). That is to say, Lee Saek was recognized authority of Yujong(儒宗, Confucian master) in the course of accepting neo-confucianism, and was located the summit in congregation of neo-confucians through the connection of Jwaju-Munsaeng (座主-門生), the relation of examiner and successful candidates.
