This paper deals with multiple wh-questions in Russian. Russian is a -MFS(Rudin's terminology) language which has no island violations and allows rather free order of fronted wh-words, However. contrary to Rudin's argument. extraction of multiple wh-words from ?toby clauses and infinitival clauses is possible.
The syntactic structure of multiple wh-question constructions which can be applied to both +MFS and -MFS languages can be described in short as follows: 1) Wh-adiuncts moved through focus movement in front of the sentence is adjoined to SpecCP'; 2) Other wh-arguments are adjoined to SpecCP: 3) Wh-word which comes after the complimentizer (ze in Polish) is adjoined to IP.
This paper adopts mechanisms of Optimality Theory which choose the optimal candidate among variants. using constraints and ranking them. Constraints. such as FRONTING, SORTKEY, SUPER(IORITY). CONJ (UNCTION) sorted out the optimal, good or acceptable. bad or unacceptable sentences with multiple wh-words in Russian. Violation of the constraint FRONTING made the worst sentences.
