The main purpose of this study is to examine tragic themes of The Brothers Karamazov, especially in comparison with Oresteia of Aeschylus(BC 525/4-456), the only extant trilogy tragedy from ancient Greece. This study will show that The Brothers Karamazov shares the main theme of Oresteia, i. e. 'the nature of human justice and divine justice,' more concretely, the fatal inheritance of sin and punishment through the family and generation, the problem of human suffering, and the moral responsibility for his own actions. As with Oresteia, Dostoevsky's last great novel has 'a collective hero'(i. e. the brothers Karamazov), and deals with the blasphemous hubris and the following bloody revenge among the members of a family. If The Brothers Karamazov as a novel of a Christian writer is based on a Christian belief, what is at center in this novel as a 'tragedy-novel' is the cult of Earth as represented by Zosima, the hierophant of Demeter mystery religion. The fates of all the members of the Karamazov family are inseparably connected with a primitive and supernatural power. And Dmitri's patricide can be defined as a revenge to Fyodor who profaned the sacredness of Earth, and, at the same time, a tool to reestablish the defiled honor and justice of the goddess of Earth. Dmitri Karamazov, as with the Greek tragic heroes, comes to the understanding of the working of the cosmic order and its true meaning through his own 'unmerited suffering.'
