This article is focused to analyze and demonstrate the role of the theme of taste and smell in The Brothers Karamazov. It is true that the theme has been shrinking its role due to the author’s strong religious and humanistic approach. The taste reveals its sweetness by focusing on Smerdyakov’s cuisine and Fyodor Pavlovich’s epicurism, while the smell centered on the stench, such as the odor of Smerdyashchaya and that of the dead body of Elder Zosima. This again exposes the author’s famous construction of contrast in The Brothers Karamazov. The fragrant scent and sweet taste represents a negative image through the role of Smerdyakov and Fyodor Pavlovich. Furthermore, the symbolism of alcoholic beverages with cognac and champagne becomes a device for contrasting Dmitry and Elder Zosima with Fyodor Pavlovich and Father Ferapont.
The most noteworthy figure emerged from this theme is Smerdyakov, who smells of strong perfumes and cooks fine fish patties. Although he becomes clearly a negative character, he is a figure with religious, ideological, and social aspects. He is not a simple lackey, but a central figure in the development of the theme of fathers and sons. Thus, special attention needs to be paid for the fact that he is a portrait of the degraded son who does not recognize his biological mother as a mother, and who murders his own father. It demonstrates the viewpoint that The Brothers Karamazov is an artistic illustration of the philosophy of Nikolay Fyodorov.
