The heroin of Moll Flanders and Josun Dynasty's Jeju Kisang, Manduk Kim lived with beautiful life. They were from poor class, but lived very strongly.
People, in times of distress and disaster, look to find benefactors. Occasionally, while seeking to find such a person they will use fictional characters as role models, such as the heroin of Mall Flanders. In Korean history Chosun Dynasty's Jeju Kisang Manduk Kim is such a person like Moll Flanders who rose about lower class roots to lead strong, beautiful lives as benefactors to others.
Moll Flanders has often been referred to as a romance novel. It is widely taught and written about as the first English novel. We should recognize that Moll Flanders is akin to tales of obsession. As readers, we are drawn into the quest of a heroin who, in some degree, escapes the bounds of every day moral, social, and psychological laws. So, if Moll is in some ways the product of sociological and psychological conditioning, then she is quite untouched in other ways by experience. She is a free spirit whom no one can defile. In this sense, she leads a charmed life.
Who reads Moll Flanders? What makes this question of more than antiquarian interest is the difficulty of determining, behind the voice of the first-person narrator, what Defoe's intentions are. Some critics have elaborated that his attitude towards Moll can be deduced from views expressed elsewhere in his other writings; others have maintained that the identification of his original reading public can shed similar light on the meaning of the book since Defoe presumably catered, as a thoroughly professional man of letters, to the tastes and expectations of his audience.
Whether or not either assumption is inherently valid is too large a critical problem to be dealt with here; in practice, however, both indirect approaches to the text of Moll Flanders have been beset with difficulties.
