In Japanese history, “ie”, which is the Japanese original grouping, a sort of family, held one of the most important positions in political, social and cultural contexts. Unlike the household in the other country, Japanese ie is not the group of blood-relatives. Here, as an approach to comprehending the fundamental issues of the ie, I will analyze the documents named Ichikawa Monjo , which provide us one example of the method of inheritance that was used in a Samurai s ie.
In the thirteenth century, the Nakano-ke ( ke means ie. It is used as a suffix following the ie s name) governed the villages Nakano and Shikumi in the country of Shinano. At that time, the soryo , which means the head of the ie, was Tadayoshi Nakano. However, his only offspring was a daughter, Kesa. Therefore, Tadayoshi gave her his land and the soryo. After that, Kesa was married with Shigefusa Ichikawa. But they were unable to bear any children. However, Kesa adopted Shigehusa s son from a previous marriage, Morihusa Ichikawa, as her own. Kesa brought Morihusa up and she left her lands and the title of soryo to him. Morihusa was not Yoshishige s progeny and had no relation of blood with Nakano-ke. But no members of Nakano-ke resisted Morihusa s being made soryo. The Shogunate Government in Kamakura accepted his succession as soryo as well. This progression shows that ie s succession is not purely blood-succession.
When the ie’s succession is not blood-related, what is the essence of the ie? The word of ie is not only used as the group. It is used for the object of transfer, and the subject of the reciprocity. In the reciprocity, the ie has the particular responsibility. The next episode will most likely provide this.
Nakano-ke has some small ies which are the soryo-ke and some branch ies. The soryo after Morihusa, Sukehusa, lent a branch ie the money to pay for her tax to the government. And Sukehusa says he did it because of his position as the soryo-ke.
This episode shows that ie has the responsibilities for the reciprocities among Nakano-ke. And ie has the same stracture as shiki . Shiki is the right of gaining some profits in reward for the duties. So, it is defined that ie is shiki.
Because ie is shiki, the successor of ie has to have the ability of achieving the duties in the reciprocity among the ies. If there is no persons who has that ability in the blood-relatives, the adopted-child from another ie is handed the ie over.
