Mutual Aid(相互扶助論) first appeared as a series of articles in the British periodical Nineteenth Century. It was published in 1902, and quickly had a world-wide impact. Certainly no single work had greater influence upon the young Chinese Anarchists than Kropotkin's Mutual Aid. If their movement had a bible, this was it.
Translating of Kropotkin's writings have appeared in Chinese. The Paris group(新世紀派) of young Chinese ended with Peter Kropotkin and Elisee Reclus whose theories in certain respects constituted a sharp challenge to Darwinism. Li Shih-tseng Translated Mutual Aid serially for the Hsin Shij-chi. Li abridged the work slightly and stopped at the end of the second chapter, but Kropotkin's essential message and the biological aspect of his supporting arguments were successfully translated.
The Tokyo group(天義派) became acquainted with Japanese anarchists, including Kotoku Shusui and Osugi Sakae. And later the Tokyo group magazine T'ien-i Pao translated Kropotkin's Mutual Aid(introduce), The Conquest of Bread(first chapter) on anarchism into Chinese.
The most famous Chinese anarchist Shifu(師復) wrote in 1914, "Anarchist morality" was “nothing but mutual aid and labor; the two are instinctive to humanity." May Fourth period of Kropotkin's idea of "mutual aid", which appeared as a functional principle-more than a utopian promise-for realizing group life, a functional concern of May Fourth radicals.
Kropotkin was to be translated into Japanese, Chinese and Korean many times during the next two decades. His theme that mutual aid was as much a law of nature as mutual struggle, and more significant for the progressive evolution of mankind was central to the Anarcho-Communist creed.
