The purpose of this research is to conduct a cross tabulation in order to grasp the awareness of the foreign origin adjectives on the basis of questionnaire for the university students in Japan and Korea.
This survey was held in September, October 2003. The survey target is 255 university students in Korea and 205 university students in Japan.
The most detailed part in this research is the “Degree of use” and “Language consciousness” of the foreign origin adjectives. An analysis method takes up two questions; “disorder of the language” and “acceptance of a new words” from the number of questions on the “language consciousness”. It also analyses the question “whether to paraphrase” from the heading “the consciousness over the foreign loan words” of the questionnaire. Then the cross analysis was conducted on the basis of the “Degree of usage” for each foreign loan word. The result is as follows.
To the question “Do you think it is better to paraphrase foreign loan words with the similar words using Hiragana or Hangul?” the answer “a little bit” in Korea was about 50%, although the answer “whichever” exceeded 30% in Japan. It seems that in Korea students prefer to paraphrase foreign loan words into native words or loan words from Chinese.
Also, to the question “Do you like new words?” the answer was 49% in Japan and 26.8% in Korea. From this result, it can be seen that in Japan people show more interest to new words that in Korea. Moreover, when we look at the rate of usage of the foreign loan words, we can see that people who answered “yes” in previous question seem to use more loan words than people who answered “no”.
Finally, the question “Do you think your native language is in disorder?” was answered “yes” 63.1% in Japan and 76.7% in Korea. In Korea “people tolerant to the disorder in language” as well as “people who like new words” have a tendency to use as well as to accept foreign loan words. On the other hand, in Japan there were seen no difference in the way of thinking about the disorder of language, no matter whether the person uses foreign loan words or not.
From these results and the cross tabulation on the questions “whether to paraphrase”, “preference of new words” and “disorder of the native language” it can be summarized that, people tolerant in language consciousness have a tendency to accept foreign origin adjectives.
