Looking through cultural exchanges between Korea and Japan, we come to know they are so far-reaching that we need to classify them by periods. If we talk about cultural exchanges in modern history, we have to take into account the special delegation called 'Tongsinsa'(organized at the end of Cho-sun dynasty for cultural exchanges between the two countries). It was sent to Japan 12 times.
Cultural exchanges through 'Tongsinsa' have been studied by sector, but as far as I know the painting sector has not included yet.
However, artists used to be accompanied with the delegation to Japan. Judging from writings and paintings that they left, we can realize pictures played an important role in cultural exchanges between the two nations at that time. Therefore, I would like to account for painting exchanges focused on 17-18 centuries in the main text.
We could roughly classify painting fields into two parts: Literati on painting and Minhwa(folk paintings). It is relatively easy to study the former because there are many records and books as well as drawings left by 'Tongsinsa' artists pertaining to it.
However, in case of the latter even though it is obvious that Korea propagated its folk paintings to Japan, we can not know how and when they are sent to Japan. We don't know who sent them, either.
Plausible guess is some members of 'Tongsinsa'(probably in low-class) left Minhwa in Japan when they did home stay on the way to Edo(a district name of Japan).
Regarding Literati on painting, I will talk about the specific period when they were left and artists who played a major role in that period. Also, I will look through the period Japan received them and consider how they changed Japanese painting history.
Regarding Minhwa, I would like to study which kinds of paintings were propagated and how they changed in Japan through traces of Cho-sun paintings left there.
Culture can be accepted as an imitative work at first, but as time goes it comes to assimilate or have a peculiar characteristic based on native traits. Therefore, it can be said that the main text will be the procedure through which a culture is explained and analogized.
