The purpose of this study is to investigate the suitability of upper body discomfort evaluation for vehicular occupant packaging. This study involves an experiment where upper body discomfort was rated for predetermined postures with the shoulder and torso angles of the subject were varied. 16 healthy male graduate students participated in this experiment. Independent variables were shoulder angle(20°, 40°, 60°), shoulder abduction(abducted, not abducted), seat back angle(100°, 115° from the horizontal plane), and seat height from floor(300㎜, 365㎜). Dependent variables were subjective ratings for upper body discomfort and arm discomfort. The results of ANOVA showed that all four main factors and the interaction between shoulder angle and seat back angle were statistically significant at α=0.05. As expected, arm discomfort increased as the shoulder angle increased. For the upper body discomfort, the discomfort took the form of quadratic function with the least discomfort shown at 32°of shoulder angle. The upper body discomfort is minimized for the range between 25 and 37 degrees of the shoulder angles. When the seat back angle was set to be 115°, the discomfort gradually increased as the shoulder angle decreased below the optimal. However, when the seat back angle was reduced to 110°, it sharply increased as the shoulder angle decreased. It shows that there exists an interaction between shoulder and seat back angles. In addition, this study showed the difference in the prediction of discomfort level between the experiment and human model.
