Shim Hoon was not only a poet and novelist but movie actor, director, scenario writer and film critic. He left the three works such as A Masked Dance(originated and adapted by him), At Dawn(originated, directed and adapted by him, presented himself) and Evergreen Tree(originated and adopted by him), and wrote a great number of critiques.
A Masked Dance criticized bourgeois tyranny and violence, and projected the viewpoint of the class and awareness of reality by Shim Hoon, who was a member of early KAPF. He censured capital tyranny through the situation where pure and weak young lovers were sacrificed by an avaricious capitalist's trick and plot. However, this movie was destined never to be made just because of the capital.
At Dawn was produced and released in 1927 with an ex-convict's true story as a motif on film. Based on the sacrifices of past generations, this movie had the motif of promising the hope of present or future generation. A Masked Dance fell into defeatism and nihilism, whereas At Dawn suggesting hope enabled me to detect the changes in his awareness of reality.
Also, At Dawn highlighted elaborate techniques of scenario and delicate depiction. In particular, his depiction of the introduction that a hero got out of a prison to be headed for a street was evaluated to have very excellent lyric and pictorial images.
his critiques described film by a very actual field-oriented approach. The critiques projecting his experiences as a director caused dispute by colliding with KAPF critic's utilitarian and ideal approach. Also, he presented a plan for developing the Chosun filmdom of those days diagnosing its problems and pending questions through the article "The Present and Future of Chosun Filmdom". He was a cineaste who had agonized between the ideal and reality of Chosun film, between artistically and commerciality of a film.
