Since these twelve years, recent human geography has been historically-sensitive and concerned about structure-agency relationship as a reaction against empiricism and positivism. In the process of these changes, it seems that historical geography leads human geography to another intellectual realm i.e. the social one.
Conventionally, historical geography both in Korea and in English world has interested in cultural realm. Themes such as 'visual landscape' and 'cultural morphology' have investigated by many scholars who engaged in this discipline. But those researchers have become pregnant with tigers might attack themselves. Those tigers wanted to see other worlds beyond the visual and morphological facets of culture with supports of social theories and historical philosophies.
Recently, historical geography experiences a translation to the social turn from the cultural turn. Classics of this discipline which dug into cultural landscape has enlarged both in themes and methodologies. I think that these trends have three leading tributaries: the study on 'regionalization of social groups' ; on 'landscape as a symbolic representation' ; and on 'old maps and geographical discourses as a text'. This turn is a project not to substitute classics of historical geography but to extend the width and depth of understanding on cultural dimension.
