This article is an ethnographic description of gathering brown seaweeds in Huksan island. To describe the custom of gathering brown seaweeds in Huksan island, I apply two concepts. One is 'Image of limited goods', the other is 'personal strategy'. A well known Foster's concept, 'Image of limited goods' put emphasis on adaption mechanism in peasant society or island society. On the other hand, 'personal strategy' which is one of the most important concept of political anthropology is focusing on maximization of personal interests and manipulation. This two concepts are key word of my ethnographic description.
My research village is Moraemi which has small land and scarce resources. In my village, equal use and appropriation of natural resources such as brown seaweeds is very importantly recognized. This recognition is, I think, extension of 'Image of limited goods'. All sea rock is equally divided by Bans which is sub unit of village and all gathered brown seaweeds are equally divided by members of Ban.
However, despite equal use and divide is discourse, each individuals endeavor to get more brown seaweeds. Villagers sometimes had been manipulated persons to make more advantaged gathering set and made free with gathered brown seaweeds. They developed distinctive family structure to have more brown seaweeds. That is, the eldest son set up a new separated family and younger son inherited his parent's family. This is a result of personal strategy to adapt ecological conditions.
To sum up, in my village, the ideal cultural rule of equal use of natural resources and the pragmatic rule of personal strategy to get more resources are two key concept of social dynamism.
