Although the significance of the Korean war in the course of the contemporary Korean history has been fully acknowledged among the scholars in the Korean churches, it is still controversial how to assess its essential nature and impact upon the Korean Christianity. In response to the scholarly debate, this article is intended to demonstrate the Korean churches' perception and response to the tragic civil war by scrutinizing the ministry and thought of Rev. Kyung-Chik Han who was one of the most prominent Korean leaders during the Korean war.
Rev. Han's ministry to the Korean war can be described by the 'spiritual.' 'national.' 'social.' and 'international' characteristics which reflect appropriately the historical fact that how the Korean churches have been involved in the course of the Korean war. First, Rev. Han was not only the pastor of Youngnak Presbyterian Church but also an evangelist to the nation who had to face the unprecedented ordeals. Second, he was a national activist who tried to save the country from the civil war. Third, he was a social worker whose primary concerns were to help the needy to overcome their daily sufferings. Fourth. he was an international figure who was able to call a global attention to the confrontations in the Korean peninsula.
The Korean war, in fact, enhanced the popular anti-communist ethos in the Korean churches which had been severely persecuted by the communist. However, the study of Rev. Han's thought reveals that the desires for 'peace' and 'national reunification' have been consistently preserved, which may bring the Korean churches new insights to reinterpret the essential nature of the Korea war and its fundamental impact upon the Korean Christianity. This biographical approach to the Korean war apparently confirms the presence of the Korean churches for the suffering nation over the war.
