This study analyzes the popular Korean music video texts with three main objectives. First, this study investigates the gender images and gender discourses. Second, it examines music video's visual expressive modes pertaining to postmodernism. Third, it attempts to question that the postmodernist modes contribute to resist or subverse the gender representation system based on the traditional patriarchal binarism.
The sample for the text analysis is the most popular 57 Korean music video, which were the top five in the popularity list of every week in 2000, surveyed by Korean music cable channel, m.net.
The music videos are categorized into "the star oriented music video," "narrative music video" and "mixed music video" based on the visual styles. The music videos for female singers tend to be made as star music videos. In contrast, the music videos for male singers are made as narrative or mixed styles of music videos. The most popular themes of the songs are the love between men and women. The most of Korean music videos seem to have male dominant texts which are constructed through male gaze.
This study finds that the gender images in Korean music videos have the traditional sexual distinction. Women are represented as sexual objects, or passive and domesticated ones, while men are portrayed as active and powerful subjectivity. The Korean music videos tend to be produced using postmodernist visual modes such as the pastichs, the destruction of conventional narrative, the self-reflectivity, and the schizophrenic stance by the unceasing image series.
In conclusion, the postmodernist modes in the Korean music videos tend to sustain or reinforce the traditional binary of gender representational system. And according to the results, this study tentatively interprets that the postmodernist modes could not work subversively in commercial texts such as music videos.
