This paper examines the concept of ‘cultural proximity′ in the case of so-called the ‘Korean wave,’ which has been spreading out in East-Asian region in the last few years. The flow of television programs has been increased in the East-Asian countries in general. Considering the long dominance of Hollywood media industries, this increase meg be regarded as a hopeful change. Many scholars examined the regional flow of television programs with the concept of ′cultural proximity′. The concept of cultural similarity is developed from the flow of telenovela in Latin America. But it has more or less been discussed based on superficial audience surveys. Some have also criticised that the use of the concept is an essentialist perspective of culture, and proposed to examine the concept in the historical context. This paper discussed the cultural proximity of ′Korean wave′ in the context of globalization. East-Asian countries have common experiences from the conflict with the West in the beginning of the twentieth century, however, these societies have never actively communicated with one another due to many reasons including ideological confrontations, economic problems, etc. throughout the last century. At the end of the twentieth century, however, we saw rapid growth of television industry and people’s demand for the regional programming in a more globalizing context. The development of television industries in East Asia went side by side with the process of globalization. When the industry faced shortage of television programs to supply, they found alternatives from their neighbours. In this situation, well developed Korean television dramas were largely welcomed by East-Asian audience as Korean television dramas have more similar characters, modern places, and the similar feelings, norms, and values. They also have the universal forms, which can be categorized as telenovela. They used the very popular and universal themes which have dealt with ′love, friendship, and success of the youth. ′ The similarities in form are also founded from the happy-ending closure and linear narrative in the dramas. Korean television dramas frequently represented the human relationships according to the Confucian five ethics and values as well. This paper implies the cultural contact of East-Asian countries can be possible in the process of globalization which have developed the role of television and destroyed the various limitations of the regional communication. The Korean wave as a regional flow of television programs can be explained with the concept of cultural proximity in the context of globalization.
