This study is intended to reveal that, in the times when the Japanese and national discourses of shamanism were pitted against each other on one hand and collaborated on the other hand in 1930s. 〈Munyodo〉(1936) and 〈The Moon〉(1947), the representative works of shamanism by Dong-Ree Kim, depict the processes of overcoming fear and anxiety arising from the mood, like the so-called fin-de-siecle unrest under the Japanese imperialism, through a unique logic system, eroticism.
As a part of the colonial policies to rationalize inferiority and the stagnant state of the Joseon (朝鮮)'s people, the Japanese discourses of shamanism justified the primitiveness of Joseon's tradition and the assimilation of Japan and Joseon. The discourses of shamanism by the Joseon's intellectuals, beginning as a national discourse, had changed their characteristics to supplement and rationalize the Japanese discourses of shamanism. In such a historical context, the writer Dong-Ree Kim defined Joseon's shamanism as a unique and genuine Joseon's religious belief and developed it through his own principles of literary embodiment. Using equations developed by Dong-Ree Kim. 'Joseon'='shamanism' and 'Joseon'='Orient', the unique Joseon's religious belief is subsumed within the unique 'oriental' religious belief, and then, with the oriental tradition, as opposed to the occidental one. Ironically, pursuing the Joseon's uniqueness through returning back to the primitiveness nullifies the boundaries between peoples(nations) and restored universalism. These characteristics of his discourse of shamanism were reflected onto the dual, or ironical, characteristics of his works.
His motive, to write short stories of shamanism, was to show how to overcome the problems during the Japanese rule and the so-called fin-desiecle unrest in the modern times. They seem to be different, but have a common violence to cause people to have existential fear and anxiety. In addition to subconsciousness and finitude(mortality), absurd violence of the outer world is one of the key factors to increase the fear and anxiety of human existence. The epics of shamanism in the works by Dong-Ree Kim were driven by such fear and anxiety, and the strong desire to overcome them. He depicted in his works the dramatic aspects to overcome the fear and anxiety through a mythical and transcendental logic system based on the undifferentiated view of shamanism. His works shape the existential aspects, which cause people to have fear and anxiety, and show the possibility or impossibility of human unity for overcoming the fear and anxiety. This means that the realization of eroticism in his works is a metamorphosis of the fear and anxiety of human existence.
Eroticism is what a separate and discontinuous human being desires to acquire continuity, infinitude, and wholeness by mixing, unifying, and identifying himself with the other. This has a close relationship with concerns about wholeness, unity, and understandability. It is important that the eroticism shaped in the Dong-Ree Kim's works of shamanism has a literary characteristic with respect to the Joseon's social and historical situations under the Japanese rule in 1930s and 1940s. Eroticism puts together unifying individuals, and puts emphasis on universalism. This is the basic cause that his literature (or his view of literature) has dual and ironical characteristics, which are inherent in the interactions with the social and historical conditions under the colonial rule.
