Since the 1960s African novelists have increasingly privileged the role of women in society, but up till now no novelist has presented a heroine who achieves success in the context of national development. Whether they succeed or fail African heroines do so strictly as individuals, and if they succeed it is often at the expense of the wider community. This runs counter to the very strong emphasis on community in African cultures and also to the received wisdom in development studies, which insists on the importance of women's role in the process of national development. There is, therefore, a socially retrograde tendency in the apparently progressive trend of African fiction.
