The present paper is the first part of ‘The Study of Feminine Consciousness in Korean Poems’ which deals with the stream of feminine emotion in the poems ranging from ′Kongmudohaga′ the first work in ancient times, through poems called Hyangga in Shilla, Popular songs in Koryo, Sijo along with Kasa in Yi Dynasty to ′Lover′s Silence′. ′Flowers of Azaleas′ in 1920′s and contemporary poems. The history of Korean classic literature has developed with poems put in importance. and the feminine emotion is found in the very first work of Kongmudohaga. maintaining its womanlike tradition afterwards in Korean poems.
Here the feminine emotion is examined in two ways : one way is womanliness and the other is motherliness. It matters little whether the poet was a man or a woman that the poem has the nature of feminine emotion. The womanliness consists in the women′s sorrow after her husband went far away. and women′s attitude remaining faithful to the memory of her husbands and so on. The motherliness is felt in women′s devoted love of their children.
Other poems express women′s self-examination through working hard. and women′s self-consciousness as human beings. In this regards we know that the feminine emotion of the Korean ancient poems is more related with womanliness than motherliness. And how such tradition of classical poems maintains its main stream and changed its details through middle and modern Korean poems are to be examined in next parts of the whole study.
