This paper analyses the functional role, geographical distribution and musical features of the folk songs Meinari by comparing various versions of folk songs. Although considered to be present mainly in the eastern part of South Korea because of the fundamental musical mode Meinari-Tori, Meinari, as my study shows, has also been transmitted in the north-western part of Korea. This study demonstrates that Meinari folk songs have been integrated in agricultural activities in the north-western region of the Korean peninsular.
When looking at the two regional types of Meinari and their musical features, many similarities can be discovered. First of all, both, the north-western type of Meinari and the eastern type Meinari are related to agricultural activities, especially the weeding processes. Secondly, both types of songs have no metric system and are made of free rhythm and melisma and therefore make the singing more time-consuming. This may one reason why it has been more difficult for people to remember and transmit Meinari in comparison to other folk songs. Thirdly, Meinari in both regions also uses the lowest tone of the scale as the ending tone of a phrase that tends to make the melody go downward. Lastly, the two types of Meinari do not have a verse, as their songs are usually guided by alternate singing, taking turns after every fourth pause of a song. The only characteristic found in this study that distinguishes the north-western type of Meinari from the eastern type is the musical mode which is called Tori, Meinari-Tori(musical mode of eatern region) vs Kyeongseo-Tori(musical mode of north-western region).
With regard to it’s musical features, this study stresses that Meinari should be understood as ‘a type of song’ with some of the characteristics I have explained above. Hence, I presented these kind of songs as ‘a Type of Meinari’[Sori-ryu소리類]. I also showed Korea’s two types of Meinari, (1)the north-western type of Meinari and (2)the eastern type. But for folk songs, as widely known, it is difficult to make a definite distinction between ‘types of Meinari’ and types of folk singing that cannot be classified as Meinari.
Nonetheless, we can find many individual songs[Sori-jong소리種] belonging to the two types of Meinari. For the eastern type of Meinari, Meinari[Minari] in Gangwon province and the eastern part of Gyong-gi province, Odokttegi in Gangwon province, Eosayong[Sanyuwha] and Jeongjasori in Gyeongsang province, and Sanya in eastern part of Jeola province are all provinces in which types of Meinari folk singing can be found. For the north-western type of Meinari, songs classifiable as Meinari and Ginari exist mainly in Pyeong-an province, Gamnaigi in Hwanghae province, with many nameless weeding songs that have the same musical features with Meinari.
