Sungsijunghyohengrok’(成侍中孝行錄) is the book which records the filial piety from his family of Sungsijung(成侍中). It documented the life of Sungsijung.
The important contents of Sungsijunghyohengrok is that when his father died, he was carrying his father’s body back and he met the tiger. And he followed the tiger, so that he found the propitious site for his father’s grave. And he hold the funeral his father at this place.
Sungsijunghyohengrok is the example of the records of filial piety from being handed down the family. We called it private own. It is the very important book for us to study.
As I researched the book, I found the characteristics of it as the followings.
At first, woodblock print of this book is well composed. It is used simple touch. The technique of woodblock print is succinct but the key points are well represented according to the contents.
At second, the character of this book painted brief and strong touch of brush. The number of touch represented the characteristics of the person. The ratio of body is five or six. People are stable and graceful.
At third, the touch of mountains is simple but the volume and movement is well painted. The important mountain is represented by the sharp touch of brush. The mountain’s outline was wrinkled(Which we called Jun(?). As the painter showed the squared buildings, he used the smooth touch of background. It was represented the harmony of this picture.
At fourth, the woodblock print of Sungsijunghyohengrok is not painted by appreciating but by practical ends. And the way of touching about the character and the mountain was repeated. The way of repeating expression was showed another woodblock print such as Samganghengsildo(1726, 三綱行實圖) and Yilunhengsildo(1727, 二倫行實圖) in Youngcho(英祖) periods of Chosun dynasty. The woodblock print after Youngcho periods was used the simple touch of brush because they wanted to show the space sense and perspective sense. However, We saw the various composition in the Sungsijunghyohengrok. The character of this picture was changed according to the size, pose, the angle of building, the size of building, and the physical aspect of a mountain.
Sungsijunghyohengrok has the only characteristics among woodblock print. It has very important picture because it shares the characteristics between the private woodblock print and public woodblock print.
