This paper investigates Yi U′s(李?, 1637-1693) life and expert activities such as collecting paintings and calligraphy, and publishing albums of calligraphic works through the dynasties. As a grandson of King S?njo(宣祖, r. 1567-1608), he was favored by the kings and was grown under the artistic milieu enhanced by his father Inh?ng′gun, Yi Y?ng(仁興君, 李瑛, 1604-1651). After father′s death, he received the honorable title, Nangs?n′gun(郞善君) as a royal descendant.
At the age of twenty five, 1662, he participated in publishing Y?ls?ng ?p′il-ch′?p(列聖御筆帖), Album of Calligraphic Works by Successive Kings of the Chos?n Dynasty, as woodblock prints for the first time. Since the middle age, he has governed all procedures to compile and print several kings′ lyrics and proses as huge volumes. Those facts show that he was perceived as one of the main compilers in the royal court.
Being naturally interested in painting and calligraphy, Yi U has collected a lot of famous art works including those of famed Chosen painters and calligraphers. Among them include works by An Ky?n(安堅), Yi Sang-jwa (李上佐), Yi Ch?ng(李楨) and Yi Ky?ng-yun(李慶胤) who were active in both early and middle Chos?n periods.
He has made several calligraphy albums including Tong′guk My?ngp′il(東國名筆), Collected Works by Korean Famous Calligraphers, which he selected some parts of works by important calligraphers of successive dynasties.
On the other hand, he has gathered ink rubbings from ancient steles and epitaphs throughout the country and made Taedong K?ms?k-s?(大東金石筆), Collected Rubbings from Korean Steles, as seven volumes in 1668. To date, theses albums have been thought to be one of the influential ink rubbing collections because we can get useful information of various steles both extant and now lost.
Such a collection was possible for him due to his close relationship with an eminent scholar, H? Mok(許穆, 1595-1682). H? was much immersed in Ancient Chinese writings called komun(古文) represented in old steles and discussed examples of ancient writings with Yi U that he had taken from China. Yi′s collection of rubbings was well-known among his contemporary scholars who also compiled many samples of rubbings to study various calligraphic script styles.
In conclusion, Yi U occupied a key place as an eminent collector and compiler in the history of art collection of the seventeenth century before it was flourished among noble and middle people in the eighteenth century.
