The compilation of a book of sihwa(詩話, poetic story) and sipyeong(詩評, poetic criticism) began in earnest during Koryo period in Korea. The existing books of sihwa and sipyeong of the Koryo period are "Pahanjip(破閑集)" by Yi In-ro(李仁老), "Bohanjip(補閑集)" by Choe Ja(崔滋), and "Yeokongpaeseol(礫翁稗說)" by Yi Je-hyeon(李齊賢). More works of the sihwa and sipyeong type besides the above were compiled but these have been disregarded from the study since they do not exist today. Therefore, in this study, in a sense of adding to the existing knowledge, I tried a philological study on the lost the books of sihwa and sipyeong of the Koryo period. The following is a summary of this study.
1. The books of sihwa and sipyeong compiled during Koryo period are the following five books: "Japseo(雜書)" by Jeong Seo(鄭敍), "Pahanjip" by Yi In-ro, "Bohanjip"("Sokpahanjip(續破閑集)") by Choe Ja, "Donggukmungam(東國文鑑)" by Kim Tae-hyeon(金台鉉), and "Yeokongpaeseol" by Yi Je-hyeon.
2. "Japseo" by Jeong Seo was a first book of sihwa and sipyeong compiled in the Koryo period and this has to be reflected anew in the historical record of Koryo criticism. Accordingly, regarding "Pahanjip" by Yi In-ro as tile first instance in the existing literary history and the individual study should be corrected.
3. Choe Ja compiled "Sokpahanjip" for the purpose of revising" Pahanjip" by Yi In-ro and in the process of transcribing he rewrote the manuscript by inserting a part from "Japseo" by Jeong Seo and called it "Bohanjip".
4. "Donggukmungam" compiled by Kim Tae-hyeon has been known as the first collection of poems and prose in Korea but by putting annotations with sihwa and sipyeong to selected poetry and prose, it is also regarded as a book of criticism, and it was acknowledged as a book of sihwa and sipyeong even to the scholars of early Choson.
5. According to "Baekunsoseol(白雲小說)" in the late Choson period, there was a scholar who compiled a book based on the work(Donggukisanggukjip(東國李相國集) of Yi Gyu-bo(李奎報), and Hong Man-jong(洪萬宗) extracted sihwa from this book and included it in "Sihwachonglim(詩話叢林)"
The above work has been analyzed from scattered scrappy records and not from the original book sot there might be some leaps and limits in argument to a certain extent.
